Draft minutes VLOA final meeting 31 May 2018 (Mr Ups/Middlebury)

President DiVenere began the meeting with a general welcome, and called out his thanks to Assignor Harlow, Secretary Trono, Rules Interpreter Evans, webmaster Dobbins, and (newly minted) Training Coordinator/Communications point of contact Woody Carrigan.

DiVenere identified mentorship between new/experienced officials as a primary objective, although no mentor program or roster is established at this time. Another objective for next year’s business meeting is to have “extended training” then, expanding on what has been done in recent meetings.

Still another recommendation from DiVenere is to create a “mid-season” training opportunity. These initiatives are, in part, a response to Evans’ having summarized the range of training sessions, and the relatively low number of participants for these sessions .  Most surveyed thought that they were able to move between 2 man and 3 man with ease.

Assignor Harlow spoke to the difficulties of providing sufficient officials for all assignments; he stated there were games where he could find one, but not two, officials, leaving the game unscheduled. He noted the significant number of VLOA members retiring (7)/no longer active (2). It is important to take the evaluations to heart.  Harlow observed that for some games he attended as an observer there was a significant change in the on-field demeanor when the officials realized they were being observed. Another issue he cited to is the need to know and use correct mechanics. In closing he challenged the membership to be sure to block known conflict dates, to avoid then creating multiple turnbacks.

Secretary Trono reported the financial support of the VT chapter of USL is imminent, in the amount of $1,800. Still unclear is what the more formal relationship between VLOA and VT/USL will be; we understand there is likely a change in the USL structure and their relationship to the state chapter. Trono is now also the liaison to VT/USL and will be engaging them to develop and finalize their financial support and VLOA’s training/development of youth officials. Trono reminded members that the dues are payable now (and will not be deducted from mileage as had been assumed previously).

Founding Members Sportsmanship Award:

D1: South Burlington

D2: Stowe

The winning Cup story was from Mr Small, regarding a three man game where the other officials were throwing flags for illegal equipment and illegal procedure;  Evans and Wyman were the guilty parties.
